This Mastertone features Gibson's 1980 huge improvement in Banjo construction:
Instead of the multi-ply plywood rim they used for about 16 years previously, now the rims were 5-ply Maple.
Added to this was the Gibson Bell Bronze flathead tone-ring which in this case is a beefy nearly 5 lbs. in weight.
A small well-repaired peghead crack and some minor playing wear add some reality to an otherwise stellar RB-250 Mastertone Banjo.

This is Not one of the notable original 5-String Mastertones of the '30's as beloved by Earl Scruggs and Jim Mills;
This IS the notable and beloved original 5-String Mastertone as played by Charlie Poole and Dock Boggs,
both of whom helped set the stage for everyone else.
This example does have some finish issues...finish checking on the resonator and some finish loss on the neck.
Otherwise, original and straight with minor playing wear.
Presently wearing a Calf Skin Head for authenticity, but we will happily install the head of your choice.

An original 1930 Gibson TB-1 tenor banjo with full-thickness
rim, converted to 5-String by unknown professional banjo-neck maker.
The neck has little or no playing wear.
Original 1-piece flange cleverly and solidly repaired.
The hook and nut sets appear to be semi-modern replacements.
The presumably original TB-1 tenor neck in nice condition is included.
Original red-line hard case has been expertly converted to 5-string by one of the
best Mountain-Style case-conversions we have encountered.
Plays great and will easily accept the Mastertone-style tone-ring of your choice.
